David Frisby/Iain Boyd White The proposed source book, "Modern Architecture and Urban Culture, 1880-1940" will contain key texts from German sources in Austria, and Germany (and some from Switzerland). The texts, almost all of which have not appeared in English translation, will be accompanied by detailed critical introductory sections and suggested further reading and bibliographies. The texts will be focused around four major areas of concern: the development of an urban culture (including its material artifacts) and its relationship to the experience of modernity; a modern architecture that is appropriate for a modern metropolis (including reactions against it); the emergence of the modern metropolis and accompanying debates; and the debates on city planning in the metropolitan centres of Germany and Austria. The questions addressed are: how was the city experienced as a material and cultural form?; what did the city look like?; how was it to be regulated?; and what architecture was most appropriate for its specific problems and conditions?
