New Application Deadline for the Carter Manny Award: November 15

The Graham Foundation announces a new application deadline for the Carter Manny Award, the foundation’s annual award for doctoral students working on dissertation topics in architecture. The annual application deadline is now November 15. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions in early spring of each year.
Applications for the 2016 Carter Manny Award are due November 15, 2015.
Since the Carter Manny Award’s establishment in 1996, over $672,000 has been awarded to support promising scholars whose doctoral projects shape contemporary discourse about architecture and significantly impact the field. Two Carter Manny Awards are given each year, one for dissertation writing and one for dissertation research. The foundation offers this prestigious annual award in honor of Carter H. Manny and his distinguished service to the Graham Foundation since its inception in 1956, first as a Trustee, as Director from 1971, and since his retirement in 1993, as Director Emeritus.

Students must be nominated by their department to apply for the Carter Manny Award. The award is open to students officially enrolled in schools in the U.S. and Canada, regardless of citizenship. Graham Foundation Awards $496,500 in Grants to Organizations in 2015

In its second major grant announcement of 2015, the Graham Foundation will award $496,500 to support forty-nine groundbreaking projects by organizations around the world that chart new territory in the field of architecture. The funded projects—spanning major museum retrospectives, multi-media installations, site-specific commissions, documentary films, placemaking initiatives, e-publications, and academic journals—advance new frameworks for investigating architecture and its role in contemporary society and expand opportunities for public dialogue across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
The new grantees comprise a diverse group of national and international organizations in cities across North America and the world, from Chicago to Mexico City, London to Buenos Aires, and Oslo to Kiev. They include both established and emerging institutions, including art and architecture museums, non-profit architecture centers and visual arts spaces, universities and alternative schools, and academic and independent publishers.
In addition, twelve of the newly announced grants will support innovative public programs and exhibitions that will coincide with the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, which runs from October 3, 2015 through January 3, 2016.

The Graham Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2016 Grants to Individuals. Since 1956, the Graham Foundation has provided direct funding to individuals to produce publications, exhibitions, films, research, and other projects that foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society.
Eligible individuals interested in applying for a grant must submit an online Inquiry Form, the first stage of a two-stage application process, by September 15, 2015 at 5PM CDT.

The Graham Foundation is seeking a Program Coordinator to work directly with the Managing Director of Public Programs to coordinate and produce several original and traveling exhibitions per year in addition to a weekly schedule of public and private events. Additionally, he/she provides critical administrative support to ensure successful daily operations and long term institutional growth.

Graham Foundation Awards $490,000 in Grants to Individuals in 2015

An exhaustive photographic survey of modernist architect Le Corbusier’s completed architectural works and a multimedia, online oral history chronicling the efforts to build housing for homeless individuals living with HIV and AIDS in New York City are among the newest projects to receive individual grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the foundation announced last night at the historic Madlener House in Chicago.
In its first major grant announcement of 2015, the Graham Foundation will award over $490,000 to support 63 outstanding projects by individuals that engage original ideas in architecture. Among the funded projects are exhibitions, publications, multimedia archives, documentary films, podcasts, symposia, participatory workshops, and live performances. These diverse projects advance new scholarship in the field of architecture, fuel creative experimentation and critical dialogue, and expand opportunities for public engagement with architecture and its role in contemporary society.
The new grantees comprise a diverse group of architects, artists, designers, filmmakers, scholars, educators, curators, and writers around the world in cities such as Istanbul, Montreal, Tokyo, and Chicago, where the Graham Foundation is based. Last night, the Graham Foundation hosted a public reception and presentations by four of the newly named grantees–Tiffany Lambert (New York, NY), Noritaka Minami (Cambridge, MA), Lluís Ortega (Chicago, IL), and Candacy Taylor (Los Angeles, CA)–who discussed their supported work in progress.

2015 Carter Manny Award Deadline
The Carter Manny Award supports doctoral dissertation research and writing by promising scholars whose projects have architecture as their primary focus and have the potential to shape contemporary discourse in the field of architecture. Projects may be drawn from the various fields of inquiry supported by the Graham Foundation: architectural history, theory, and criticism; design; engineering; landscape architecture; urban planning; urban studies; the visual arts; and other related fields. The award assists students enrolled in doctoral programs in architecture, art history, the fine arts, humanities, and the social sciences working on architecture topics.

The Graham Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015 Grants to Organizations. Since 1956, the Graham Foundation has provided project-based funding to individuals and organizations to foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society.
The application for the organizational grant cycle is available online. The deadline to submit applications is February 25, 2015. Organizations with eligible projects are invited to apply for a Production and Presentation Grant for projects that begin after September 15, 2015.

Chicago Architecture Biennial Announces Launch of Lakefront Kiosk Competition

As a Presenting Partner of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, we are excited to share the announcement of the Lakefront Kiosk Competition: an international, open submission competition that calls for a designer to realize an innovative architectural work on the shoreline of Lake Michigan. The new kiosk – a work of micro-architecture – will be installed on the Chicago’s lakefront and featured in Millennium Park as part of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial (October 2015 – January 2016).
A jury of architects, curators, and city representatives will select one winner to receive the BP Prize, which includes an honorarium for design development and a construction budget to realize the design. The Lakefront Kiosk Competition is organized in partnership with the Chicago Park District and the City of Chicago.
