Annette Ferrara 6pm Tuesday, April 5 Watch a video of this lecture:
Video running time is 51 minutes. TENbyTEN magazine: Space for Visual Culture is a printed love note to contemporary Chicago design. The most recent manifestation of this love affair was a competition TENbyTEN sponsored with Design Within Reach in the fall of 2004 called Modern + Design + Function - Chicago Furniture Now (MDF). A call to arms for emerging designers, a deluge of entries evidenced a strong commitment to innovation and modern design in the city and beyond. Twenty-five furniture designs and twenty-four designers were selected as finalists. Annette Ferrara, founder and editor-in-chief of TENbyTEN, will speak about some of the more compelling competition entries and the role the magazine plays within the design community and in Chicago. Annette Ferrara initiated TENbyTEN, a Chicago-based independent magazine that explores the connections between art, architecture, design, and fashion, in 1999. She recently co-authored Xtreme Interiors (Prestel, 2003), a book covering over thirty national and international manifestations of over-the-top contemporary interior design. She has written for such magazines as Artforum, Bookforum, zingmagazine, and Provincetown Arts, and has worked as a research assistant for The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné Project; as director of Alan Koppel Gallery, Chicago; and as Assistant Director of The Arts Club of Chicago. Ferrara also teaches contemporary art history courses at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. She holds an M.A. in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Copies of the spring 2005 issue of TENbyTEN, "Luck," will be available for purchase after the lecture. |
